What causes TMJ?
TMJ Disorders is a broad term which can be used to describe a magnitude of conditions. Minor Disorders such as clicking or popping disorders of the jaw through to more serious symptoms, such as persistent pain, which can extend into the face, neck and shoulders; are all classed as TMJ Disorders.
The Temporomandibular Joints are important in many ways and connect the jaw bone to the skull. These joints are located in front of each ear and operate as a “ball and socket”. To work correctly these joints depend on proper alignment of muscles and teeth to work smoothly. They are necessary for opening and closing the mouth, chewing, swallowing, breathing, talking, yawning and kissing.
The Temporomandibular Joint is a very complex system that is just beginning to be understood.
